Literacy Week 2022

Thank you to everyone for another successful Literacy Week! It was great to be able to organise a face to face Literacy Week this year. Last year, due to covid restrictions, everything had to take place virtually.

During the week, current covid restrictions were lifted and we were delighted to host our usual Literacy Week traditions. Not only did this mean we could reward students for their excellent contribution to the reading program, but also we could involve the whole school in celebrating literacy.

To prepare students for the week, Ms Rezaei and Miss Alldritt delivered an assembly about how reading will not only help them whilst in school, but afterwards in helping them work towards their career after Lealands. We used this opportunity to get our students to think about what profession they would like to go into when they are older.

During tutor time, activities were focused on careers and how reading will help them. This was also a good opportunity for teachers to discuss with students how reading is linked to their chosen job. It was also a positive exercise for students to think about their end goal.

On Monday, we launched our Dragons’ Den competition, where we asked students to submit an idea for a book. We are currently going through all of the entries and will hopefully be able to film our Dragons’ Den scene soon. We had many great ideas ranging from action, thriller and fantasy, and it’s very encouraging to see that so many of our students are so creative.
Wednesday, we hosted a book swap during break time, and Thursday, we invited the top 40 readers in Year 7 and 8 to a pizza party and to watch a film in the afternoon. We are always delighted to host these and it’s great to see the students being rewarded and enjoying themselves.

On Friday, our students dressed up as their favourite book characters. Mr Burridge is judging the winner who will be announced shortly, and I would like to use this opportunity to thank those that dressed up and really made an effort. The money raised is being donated to Keech Hospice Care. Please see below a snippet of what we saw on Friday. We can’t wait for next year and we thank everyone for taking part.
