Welcome Sonny & Storm!

Welcome to the newest members of the Lealands family: Sonny and Storm, our delightful therapy rabbits!

Residing with KS3 Team Leader, Mrs. Strachan, these caring and well-behaved Flemish rabbits bring a touch of warmth and companionship to our school community. Born in January 2024, Sonny and Storm possess the perfect temperament to become invaluable assets to Lealands. Known for their child-friendly nature, lively spirit, and gentle demeanour, these rabbits offer demonstrable affection and sensitivity, coupled with outstanding trainability. But their role goes beyond mere companionship. Sonny and Storm serve as educators, teaching our students vital life lessons in responsibility, patience, compassion, and socialisation.

With a keen sense for stress and anxiety, they provide comfort and alleviate negative feelings, benefiting both physical and mental well-being. Their presence is especially beneficial for students with disabilities, fostering a sense of calm and aiding in their integration within the school environment. As we welcome Sonny and Storm into our midst, we anticipate their positive impact on our students' abilities and overall well-being, ultimately contributing to improved attendance levels and a more nurturing school environment. Join us in embracing these adorable additions to our school family and witness the transformative power of their presence first hand.

Due to ongoing costs, we are looking to have students, parents and carers, local companies and individuals volunteer to support this initiative. Students will be holding regular fundraising events throughout the year to help with the costs, such as cake sales in school and sponsored activities.

Here is a list of essential items for basic rabbit care:

  • Bedding materials
  • Litter trays and fillings
  • Toys
  • Blankets for students to put on their laps
  • Rabbit-safe cleaning products
  • Pet insurance
  • Vet plan
  • Leafy greens to feed them
  • Hay

As we are a school and only open during term times, we will have to accumulate multiples of the items above as the rabbits will live in the school during the week and a member of staff will take the rabbits home on weekends and school holidays. Please could we ask if you are able to support this intervention by making any donations (financial or resources listed above), please contact us on admin@lealands.luton.sch.uk or on 01582 611600.

There is a dedicated page for our therapy rabbits in the SEND and Student Support section, which can be found by clicking here.
