Literacy and Numeracy Sessions
At Lealands High School, we are committed to ensuring that every student develops the literacy and numeracy skills needed to succeed across the curriculum and beyond.
Strong reading, writing and mathematical skills underpin learning in every subject. When students need additional support, we provide focused, short-term intervention designed to build confidence and strengthen core skills.
Intervention is carefully planned and based on assessment information and teacher expertise. It is always intended to be supportive, targeted and temporary. Our aim is to provide the right support at the right time so that every student can fully access their lessons and achieve their potential.
Literacy Intervention
We want every student to feel confident in their reading and writing. When students struggle with these core skills, it can affect their confidence and ability to access learning across the curriculum. Our literacy intervention programme provides additional support for students in Year 7-9 who would benefit from focused teaching in reading and writing, to help students strengthen these foundations and thrive in their lessons.
How Students are Identified:
Students are selected using a range of information, including:
- KS2 SATs outcomes
- CATs data
- Class assessments
- Reading Plus data
- Teacher referral
This ensures that support is carefully targeted and responsive to individual need.
How the Programme Works:
In Year 7 and 8, students attend two literacy lessons per week for one term in the Autumn or Spring.
- Year 7 students attend literacy in place of Geography.
- Year 8 students attend literacy in place of History.
The intervention is designed to be temporary. Progress is reviewed half-termly, and at the end of each terms students return to their full curriculum offer. In the Summer term, support is provided for students who need further support or those who have been recently identified.
Our aim is always to provide the right support at the right time, and no longer than necessary.
Year 9: Bridging to GCSE
In Year 9, selected students will attend literacy intervention during their mini-options block. The sessions aim to bridge the gap to GCSE English. Students develop the specific reading and analytical skills needed to approach GCSE texts and exam-style questions.
One lesson each week focuses on the reading skills tested at GCSE, using carefully selected texts and extracts. The second lesson includes Reading Plus to continue building fluency and stamina.
This ensures students are not only able to access the curriculum, but are well prepared for the demands of Key Stage 4.
Assessment and Review:
Assessment is internally designed and aligned with Key Stage 3 expectations. In Year 9, assessments are written to begin bridging towards GCSE English skills.
Progress is monitored regularly, and intervention is adapted where necessary to ensure it remains impactful.
We view literacy as positive opportunity. It is a focused period of support to strengthen foundations, build confidence and ensure that every student can thrive in their learning.

Numeracy
The main focus for Numeracy sessions are the development and refinement of students' arithmetic skills and times table recall. Having an in-depth understanding of the four operations allows students to transfer these skills to solve more complex problems. We also focus on fluency within the times tables, these are fundamental to learning as they underpin all mathematical concepts.
A typical lesson uses 'Times Table Rockstars’ to improve fluency and reviews basic calculation aspects. Elements of the KS2 curriculum are then taught using MyMaths online lessons. Students are able to complete a task on the online system which provides them with instant feedback and provides comprehensive data tracking.
Assessment is focused on arithmetic skills in particular place value, basic number facts and calculation.
- Year 7 students complete a condensed arithmetic paper which they complete as a baseline assessment when they join the school. This allows us to monitor progress and provides a direct comparison.
- Year 8 students complete a condensed arithmetic paper where the focus is place value and arithmetic.
- Year 9 students complete a full arithmetic and reasoning paper so we can see how they apply their numeracy skills.
